Sunday, January 14 & Monday, January 15 • Spellman Hall

Following the murder of George Floyd, an apolitical and diverse group of Chester County residents, The Racial and Cultural Equity (R.A.C.E.) Group came together to talk about whether this could happen in our community. The R.A.C.E. Group’s mission is: to foster the humanization of all Chester Cunty residents through mutual respect, caring, and understanding. They seek to develop trust, empathy, and awareness of the negative impact of systemic racism.

A vision emerged to counter the negative way black and brown men are portrayed in the media by portraying positive images of black and brown men in our community. They partnered with an award winning photographer, Sandrien de Bruijn-Mesman, to bring this project to life. The 20 Men Project reintroduces black men and boys to the American public through truthful depictions of black males in our society, so we will recognize that they are not a threat to our communities, lives and livelihoods. A powerful and positive change occurs when we see black men as neighbors, friends and productive members of our community.

Westminster will display the 30x40 size canvasses of the 30 men who were photographed and interviewed in Spellman on Sunday, January 14 and Monday, January 15 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) until 12 pm. Sandrien de Bruijn-Mesman will speak to our Journey class at 10:45 am in Spellman Jr & Zoom on January 14. More info coming soon. Questions? Contact Jennie Clark.
